Student Responsibilities

Students on a varsity program are responsible for their academic success. Most universities expect student-athletes to maintain above a 2.0 GPA in order to remain eligible for collegiate competition. In order to remain eligible for their sport. This requirement places a great deal of responsibility on student-athletes, as they must balance the demands of their sport with the demands of their coursework. The time commitment for varsity sports can be significant, with practices, games, and travel often taking up a large portion of their days and even weekends. Oftentimes, student-athletes are also expected to attend team meetings and events, further limiting their available time for studying and completing assignments.

Study Hall

Student athletes face a unique set of challenges as they balance their academic responsibilities with rigorous sports commitments. In order to support their academic success, many universities have implemented study hall requirements for student athletes. These requirements typically involve setting a certain number of hours per week for student athletes to complete their academic work under supervision in a designated study hall. The goals of these study hall requirements are twofold: first, to ensure that athletes are managing their time effectively and not falling behind in their coursework, and second, to provide a structured environment for them to focus on their studies. 

Academic Advisors

Students on varsity programs are provided with a designated academic advisor to guide you through the various academic processes and ensure you are up to date with all your coursework, upcoming exams and other important deadlines. These advisors are knowledgeable about the academic requirements and policies of your specific program and can help you plan your course schedule accordingly. In addition to providing academic support, these advisors can also assist with career planning and provide resources for internships and job opportunities.

Strength & Conditioning

Many NCAA institutions have state of the art training facilities for athletes to take advantage of. Athletes are most commonly in the weight room 3-4 times a week with their respective sports teams. Each team has a strength and conditioning coach that will supervise and run your sessions and tailor the sessions based on the season and needs of the athletes. training as an NCAA athlete comes with a personalized and comprehensive workout plan designed specifically for your sport. Nutritionists and trainers work together to create personalized meal plans to meet the specific needs of each athlete based on their sport and training schedule.

Practice

Athletes commonly have practice for their sport daily with 1-2 rest days per week. Athletes will train as a team and depending on the sport be put into sub-groups for specified training. Practice will be run by your designated coach. Being an NCAA athlete is not simply about playing a sport at a collegiate level, it is a lifestyle that requires dedication, discipline, and sacrifice. As an NCAA athlete, you are not just a student or an athlete, but both. You have the responsibility of representing your institution on and off the field, court, or track. This means attending rigorous practices, training sessions, and team meetings, all while managing a demanding academic schedule.

Competition

As long as athletes remain eligible to compete, during your season you will compete 2-4 times or more a month representing your collegiate program. Your performance in competition is important and can enable you to boost your scholarship standing or decrease it based on your athletic market value. Competitions may be at home or away in another state or city. When travelling athletes will be given per-diem for miscellaneous expenses based on necessities for the trip such as food and travel. The NCAA is home to some of the most prestigious and highly competitive sports programs in the country. From football to basketball to track and field, every sport requires a fierce level of dedication, training, and skill.

Pro Drafts

Depending on the sport, a select number of athletes will be privileged enough to enter the pro draft of their respective sport. Those that take advantage of the opportunity sign pro contracts, possibly after 1-year of college, or after graduating. The transition from college athletics to the professional level is a dream that many NCAA athletes strive for. Getting drafted into one of the major professional sports leagues, such as the NFL, NBA, MLB, or NHL, is a prestigious accomplishment that represents years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. It is a moment that these athletes have been preparing for since their childhood, and it is the ultimate test of their skills, talent, and potential.
